The N-Control Avenger Impressions: Pax East 2011 Hands-on

From the Pax floor

One of the first products I got my hands on at PAX East 2011 was N-Control’s The Avenger. I had no idea about this device and I was a bit skeptical. Really, how much faster can this doohickey make you press buttons? Answer: A lot faster than you think. Granted, my only experience was at the PAX East floor but the representatives at the booth were kind enough to let me demo the controller-attachment playing Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Initially using The Avenger felt awkward. I did not know where to place my fingers even after the guy at the booth demonstrated. I instinctively tried to put my fingers in the most comfortable position but after getting accustom to the finger placement, it felt comfortable. The beauty of the Avenger is that it’s highly customizable. With the controller I had, the levers were above the face buttons (except for A) and the straps for the triggers were very easy to position. With everything in place, all you need is to flick the lever or strap and you’re already in action. Playing Black Ops, the controls felt responsive and quick, and I used very little effort to execute button presses. According the one of the spokesperson at the booth, the device was intended to help disabled players, and I can see why since little force can be used to activate a button which you usually have to press with thumb.

The Avenger seems to suit the gameplay style of first person shooters as players in those games live and die by split-second precision but the official website claims it suits all types of games. My hands-on with Avenger was a positive experience. The button input was a lot faster with less effort, and should help with those who are prone to hand cramps or have some type of injury. For owners of the Playstation 3, there isn’t an attachment yet for the Dualshock controller but a representative informed me that if sales are good, a PS version should come down the line in the future. If you’re curious check out the N-Control Avenger website filled with information, videos and pictures. As of this writing they are offering a 30-day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied. It seems they have utter confidence in their product.
