Bulletstorm Demo thoughts

Just finished playing a brief demo of Bulletstorm. My thoughts? It's pretty cool, gameplay wise. Bulletstorm is trying to breakout into a saturated and stiff market filled with quality first-person shooters but it may be unique enough to hold its own and separate itself from the pack, if the demo is any indication.

First thing you'll notice is the graphics. This game looks good, it still has a bit of that Unreal flavor, but that doesn't detract at all. The game is slick and fast. What I'm not too much a fan of is the character designs, it's not bad but it's just okay. The designs come off as Gears of War-lite, characters have that thick armor look but it's scaled down a bit meaning they look a lot more human than let's say- Marcus Fenix. The only character design I’m especially not fond of is the main character Grayson Hunt. He just comes of looking like a reject wimpy version Wolverine and interestingly enough, his voice actor actually played Wolverine in the X-MEN: Evolution cartoon series. Enemies in the demo are a mix of humans and green human creatures, they're objective: shoot the hell outta you and run right into your face, but this tactic falls to your advantage as you‘ll see. And speaking of in your face, this game really wants to be in your face, if it already isn‘t. With the inflated use of vulgar language (“Dick-tits”), this game really shows you that it’s extreme to the max but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. This may be funny to some, and others may be turned off by the excessive language. I personally don’t care much for it but it suits the entire nature of the game and its gameplay.

Bulletstorm's gameplay can be described as a fast-paced, arcade style first-person shooter. Unlike other games on the market, this game rewards you for killing your enemies in such an over-the-top and exaggerated fashion. The player is awarded points depending on how unique and stylish the enemy is dismembered, in a way it‘s almost like Devil May Cry but with more opportunity for various kills. Although the demo let’s you use only 4 weapon types, there are still numerous ways to destroy the living being out of your enemy. Besides these large-than-life weapons of mass destruction, you can use your melee kick (also slide kick) to launch enemies in the air leaving them helpless as they float in bullet time for a few seconds (enough time to link up with another maneuver), you’re also equipped with a beam grapple that is used to pull your enemy towards you or anywhere else and also used to open up doors and finally you have environmental hazards to finish off your enemies with spikes, falls elevators and anything else I probably haven’t discovered. According to the game, using this “Skillshot system” and the points gained from it will let you upgrade your character and open up new ways to obliterate your enemy. Demo itself can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, from my session it was very exciting to play as you try to find new ways to kill your enemies and find Skillshots to get bigger points. As I said before, enemies have a tendency to run towards you if they are not shooting, you can use this chance to kick them in the air, fire your weapon at the appropriate points of interest such as head, crotch or rear end (I sound like someone’s grandmother I bet!) and earn points. It’s as simple as that but also just fun.

Even though the entire demo play through can take up to 5-6 minutes, it still shows so much potential to be a balls-out good time. Considering the crop of shooter games trying to take themselves ultra-seriously, it’s nice to have a game with some type of wackiness and sense of humor. I’m still deciding whether I will buy it at launch or wait (not because of the game itself but I do have a budget to adhere to!) a month or so, but I’m interested to see how rest of the game with unfold, especially multiplayer. If you haven’t heard of it, which is hard to believe because of all the ads on the site, do yourself a favor try out the demo, you’ll be dying to try and beat your first score the second time around. Dick-tits…sorry that’s all I can remember.
